The Michigan Legal Foundation is the new civil liberties leadership
in Michigan. It is a nonprofit, nonpartisan public interest law
firm committed to opposing human rights violations and defending
the rights of citizens, regardless of their political or ideological
position. The Foundation is a tax-exempt organization under Section
501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, and provides free legal
assistance to those whose liberties are threatened and who would
not otherwise have access to aid.
Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty. - John Philpot
Curran
Our areas of focus are:
- Freedom of speech, press, and association
- Freedom of religion
- Freedom from unreasonable search and seizure
- Freedom to own property
- Equal protection
- Economic liberty
- The Headlee Amendment
The need has always existed for organized opposition to human rights
violations. Policy groups, special interest groups, and grass-roots
political organizations are essential to the protection of human
rights, but equally important are judicial interpretation and precedent.
The Michigan Legal Foundation seeks to impact these areas by engaging
in strategic litigation, providing legal services and client counseling,
and sponsoring educational programs that foster an understanding
of, and appreciation for, the necessary legal foundations of a free
society.
Since resources are limited, the Michigan Legal Foundation selects
its cases and clients based on the need for assistance, the significance
of the issues involved, and the potential for establishing precedent
that will protect and advance individual liberty.
